Doomlord

Doomlord started life in The New Eagle on the 27th March, 1982.

The Eagle was an unusual comic becasue of the fact that it contained very few traditional drawn stories, most of it was in fact photostories, or fumetti as thay are also known. Fumetti had been the domain of girls mags up to this point.

The Eagle had been one of Britain's most succesful comics in the 1950's.  It was decided to relaunch it in the 1980's with the return of DanDare (albeit his great-grandson).  It was felt at the time another gimmick was needed to make the launch of the comic a success.  Hence, the fumetti idea was decided upon.

Doomlord was one of the fumetti stories that appeared in the first issue of the relaunched Eagle.  It was written by Alan Grant and John Wagner - the pair responsible for so much of I.P.C.'s comic output at the time, which included Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog. It was an immediate success.  Grant and Wagner's often brutal stories in the backdrop of suberbia in eighties Britain worked perfectly. It ran for three stories as photostories which are synopsised by Paul Scott in my Doomlord collection.

But as time moved on and readers moved away from the comic, it was decided to cut the photostories as they were time comsuming and expensive and replace them with traditional drawn stories. And so the fourth story began - Doomlord The Deathlords of Nox.  This again was written by Grant and Wagner, and illustrated by Itialian artist Heinzl (which may have been a pen name for the itialian art agent Giolitti).  The legendary Eric Bradbury soon came on board and shortly afterwards became the definitive artist on Doomlord, staying with the strip until its end in 1988.

Doomlord stories have never been fully collected with the exception of a few reprints in The Best of Eagle monthlies.  I am proud to present - collected for the first time - DOOMLORD, THE DEATHLONDS OF NOX!
